Job Description --- KCBX Director of Programming & New Media

Description: As the NPR news and music outlet in San Luis Obispo and surrounding areas, KCBX provides vital public media service to the region. We are welcoming candidates who are eager to take public media in this area to the next level and shape the future by connecting communities across the region with the best in news, information, music and cultural programming. You will have the opportunity to exercise your creativity, imagination and desire to try new things. The Director of Programming & New Media is part of our senior management team.

Responsibilities: The Director reports to the KCBX General Manager. The Director supervises on-air staff and recruits, supervises and retains on-air volunteers.

The Director develops, implements, manages and continually refines the content strategy for KCBX’s multi-platform broadcast environment in support of the station’s vision & mission. The Director will develop current and new capabilities that expand KCBX’s relevance and significance as a public media organization in the region, utilizing:

  • Broadcast,
  • HD,
  • Internet and
  • Social media and other media outlets

Qualifications: The Director must be results-oriented, with a demonstrated understanding of public broadcasting and digital media and a vision for these media to be utilized for effective public service, audience development and revenue growth.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred);
  • Five years of demonstrated successful and increasingly responsible experience in public radio programming;
  • Understanding of new media opportunities.
  • Successful experience in implementing change or re-organization preferred.
  • Experience programming public affairs and music.
  • Strong on-air ability and collaborative skills to effectively work with internal team members and external partners in both on and off site environments for a variety of research, planning and implementation activities.
  • Ability to operate broadcast technical equipment including digital editing, control boards and standard computer programs including studio automation, office suite and email programs.
  • Experience in planning and implementing production, development of local program content.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of people and to coordinate and direct the work of others;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including group presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate on-air staff and volunteers.
  • Understanding and application of audience research knowledge. Successful experience in implementing change or re-organization preferred.

EEO Longer Term Initiatives. 

1.         Training for management level personnel on methods of ensuring equal opportunity and preventing discrimination. KCBX’s General Manager attends an annual EEO program presented by an employment attorney and human resources consultant in San Luis Obispo.

2.         Sponsorship of at least two community events to inform the public of broadcasting career opportunities.  KCBX encourages tours hosted by senior managers for college students and college classes related to communications and journalism majors. In the past year, students from Cuesta Community College, and California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo have participated. KCBX encourages student internships from these schools.
