SLO: Tomorrow in San Luis Obispo at the Museum of Art the Central Coast Watercolor Society invites you to come and watch John Barnard do a watercolor demonstration at their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. The Museum of Art is at 1010 Broad Street. John lived in Mexico and Venezuela and now paints full time on the Central Coast, using watercolor, acrylic, casein and water soluble oils. He is a signature member of several art associations, has won numerous awards, had scores of solo shows and has work hanging in a couple of museum collections. His presentation and painting demonstration is tomorrow night at 7 at the Museum of Art.

S. Barbara: Tomorrow at 6:30 is the documentary film "War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death" presented by nationally syndicated, award-winning columnist Norman Solomon. His 2005 book with the same title, on which the film is based, was described as 'a definitive historical text' and 'an indispensable record of the real relationships among government authorities and media outlets' by The Humanist magazine. Solomon speaks about his latest book and hosts a special guest speaker. SLO: Plan ahead for the next concert in the Marilyn Greenberg Jazz Series: Joshua Breakstone performs on Friday August 20th at 8pm. The quote from Downbeat magazine about him is: "There is no shortage of young, knock-out jazz guitarists these days. And Joshua Breakstone is among the best of them."  Breakstone ‘s recording career has continued for more than twenty years during which he’s worked as a teacher, both privately and at the Rhode Island Conservatory of Music. Tickets are available at the Museum of Art in San Luis Obispo at 1010 Broad.

SLO: Thursday evening Cal Poly professors Chris Kitts (microbiology) and Yarrow Nelson (environmental engineering) share their thoughts on the environmental disaster in the Gulf and discuss how the ocean and shoreline may fare over time. Both have had long experience with oil spills, including the Unocal spill at Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes, one of the largest spills on land in U.S. history. The presentation is called Life After the Gulf Oil Disaster and is held at the Steynberg Gallery at 1531 Monterey Street at 7 pm.

Atascadero: This Friday night the Cache Valley Drifters perform at the Green Acre Lavender Farm in Atascadero at 7:30. For tickets, the number is 805.466.0837 to reserve your seat(s). The Cache Valley Drifters bring the best in bluegrass with sweet harmonies and dazzling musicianship – laced with the rock ‘n roll influences these boys were raised on. The one-time only concert is this Friday at Green Acre Lavender Farm.

S. Maria: This Friday is the performance of "Seussical, Jr." a lively, colorful and imaginative musical celebrating the works of Dr. Seuss. Performed by children in the Discovery Museum and City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department's "Discovery Drama Camp," this family production is at 7 pm at the Veterans Memorial Building in Santa Maria. Tickets for the performances can be purchased at the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum located at 751 S. McClelland in Santa Maria or by visiting the Recreation and Parks office in Santa Maria located at 605 S. McClelland. Tickets for adults are $10.00 and children under age 18 are $5.00. A portion of the proceeds of ticket sales benefit the programs and services provided by P.L.A.Y, (People for Leisure and Youth).

S. Barbara: The Contemporary Arts Forum in Santa Barbara holds the fundraiser “From Dusk ‘til Drawn: 24-Hour Drawing Rally:  Friday, July 23, 6 pm - Saturday, July 24, 6 pm at CAF, with a $5 entry fee and a chance to purchase artworks hot off the presses for as low as $25. www.sbcaf.org    The closing reception is Sunday, July 25, from 4-6 pm Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, which is free to attend and you can purchase remaining artworks. Watch artists and dabblers drawing and making art, and even participate in the fun! All drawings made will be sold to the public at one of four affordable prices ($25, $75, $150, and $300 plus tax); proceeds and tax will be divided among the artist drawers and CAF. Drawing is broadly interpreted and works by artists of all disciplines, skill levels, and ages are expected to grace the walls throughout the 24-hour event, so drop by more than once to see it all unfold or scoop up that one-of-a-kind work. In addition, a community wall for everyone to doodle is set up in the Bloom Projects gallery. Nipomo: In Nipomo next week, Cuesta Community College and Alan Hancock College sponsor a one week day camp for middle school students to begin exploring careers. Students in the 7th or 8th grade are eligible and have a chance to explore different career pathways through interactive, fun, and hands on activities in a group setting with local teachers, counselors and mentors. The summer camp is held July 26 – 29th from 8:30 am to 3pm. The goal is to provide middle school children with unparalleled opportunities for personal growth, new friendships, and experiences that will help define their career interests. The CTE Summer Camp program is firmly rooted in the values of education, through the exploration of California’s fifteen industry sectors and career pathways.
